Capturing the Essence of Dance: A Cinematic Photoshoot in the Sepulveda Basin’s Tall Grasses

Los Angeles is full of unexpected pockets of natural beauty, and one of my favorite spots is the Sepulveda Basin. Here, amidst the tall grasses that don’t linger for long, I recently had the pleasure of photographing Jessica, a stunning professional dancer and a Creative Artist, Dancer, and Somatic Alchemy practitioner.

Dancer in a field of grass

Jessica and I first connected while dancing together on the set of *Code Black* (the "Better Angels" episode), and our shared passion for movement and storytelling naturally led to this unforgettable session.

The Haiku of the Session:

Amidst tall grasses,

A dancer rests, dreams take flight—

Nature’s gentle breath

This haiku perfectly encapsulates the essence of our photoshoot, where we sought to blend the raw beauty of nature with the fluidity and emotion of dance. The session was more than just capturing movement; it was about uncovering joy, sadness, beauty, and rediscovery—a story told through Jessica’s graceful movements and the gentle sway of the grasses around her.

The Magic of Tall Grasses in Dance Photography

Tall grasses offer a unique and evocative backdrop for dance photography. They create an atmosphere of softness and wildness that complements the dancer’s movements, making each shot feel like a still from a cinematic story. The grasses in the Sepulveda Basin, in particular, add a dreamy, almost ethereal quality to the images, perfect for capturing the emotional depth of a dancer’s expression.

Tips for Creating an Emotional Dance Photo Session

Whether you’re the dancer in front of the lens or the photographer behind it, there are ways to ensure that your session goes beyond mere technique and truly captures the emotions of the moment.

For the Dancer:

1. Connect with Your Surroundings**: Let the environment influence your movements. Feel the texture of the tall grasses, the warmth of the sun, and the coolness of the breeze. Allow these elements to inspire your dance, making each movement a response to the natural world around you.

2. Embrace Vulnerability**: Emotional depth in a photograph comes from being open and vulnerable. Don’t shy away from expressing raw emotions—whether it’s joy, sadness, or something in between. This authenticity will translate into powerful, moving images.

3. Tell a Story**: Approach your session with a narrative in mind. For Jessica’s session, we explored themes of uncovering joy, sadness, beauty, and rediscovery. Think about what story you want to tell through your dance and let that guide your movements.

For the Photographer:

1. Create a Safe Space: To capture genuine emotion, the dancer needs to feel comfortable and safe. Start the session with a conversation, encouraging the dancer to express their feelings and thoughts. This sets the tone for a collaborative, creative process.

2. Use Natural Light to Your Advantage: The soft, diffused light of early morning or late afternoon works beautifully in tall grasses. Pay attention to how the light interacts with the grasses and the dancer’s movements, and use it to enhance the mood of your shots.

3. Focus on the Details: Sometimes, the most emotional moments are found in the smallest details—a hand gently brushing through the grasses, the wind catching a piece of fabric, or a subtle change in expression. Be patient and ready to capture these fleeting moments.

4. Experiment with Angles: Don’t be afraid to move around and try different angles. Shooting from a low perspective can make the dancer appear as if they’re emerging from the grasses, adding to the cinematic feel of the images. Conversely, a higher angle can highlight the dancer’s connection to the earth, grounding the emotion in the natural setting.

5. Encourage Movement: Static poses can be beautiful, but movement brings a dynamic, living quality to the images. Encourage the dancer to move freely, and be ready to capture the spontaneous, unscripted moments that happen between planned poses.

Photographing Jessica in the tall grasses of the Sepulveda Basin was a truly magical experience. Together, we created a series of images that are not just beautiful but deeply emotional and cinematic, telling a story that resonates beyond the frame. Whether you’re a dancer or a photographer, remember that the key to an emotional photo session lies in connection—connection with the environment, with each other, and with the emotions you’re trying to convey.
